Speed a Factor in Fatal Crash on Franconia Road, Say Police

Speed is believed to be a factor in a fatal crash on Franconia Road in Fairfax County on Sunday.

The accident happened near the intersection of Governors Pond Circle just before shortly after 9:30 a.m.

According to authorities, an Alexandria man was driving a 1994 Infiniti east on Franconia Road when he crossed the double yellow line to pass another vehicle. As he re-entered the eastbound lane, he lost control of his car and again entered the westbound lane, this time hitting a 2002 Cadillac Deville.

The Infiniti continued into a culvert, where it struck several large rocks and flipped over.

The driver of the Infiniti was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead three hours later. He has been identified as Billy Ray Allen, 65.

Authorities are continuing to investigate.
