Spark From Lawnmower Ignites Fire in McLean

No one injured

Routine yard work ignited a house fire Thursday in McLean, Va.

“It lit up in two minutes,” homeowner Arlene said. “It got to about 15 feet high in fire in less than two minutes. It was out of control.”

When Arlene’s son tried to start the lawnmower, a spark ignited some leaves, which set a shed on fire. The blaze continued along the fence, up a tree, up the side of the house and through part of the roof.

Arlene said she heard the fire crackling like a really loud fireplace before she smelled any smoke. One of her children was already calling 911. Then Arlene got all of her children out of the home.

No one was hurt.
