A 48-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his father in October 2012.

Police found 87-year-old Mack Wood's body at the foot of the stairs inside his Arlington home. His son, Mack Wood Jr. was seen running from the home screaming for help that day.

“My father had terminal cancer, and he only had a few months left,” said his daughter, Laura Wood. “And all I wanted was one more Thanksgiving and one more Christmas with my dad, and I was robbed of all of that.”

Initially, it appeared Mack Wood fell to his death but a medical examiner ruled his death a homicide and his son was later charged with first-degree murder,

“The only thing that I can think of is I guess I never really knew my brother,” Laura Wood said. “It’s like a movie, and I feel like I’m on the outside watching this.”

Mack Wood Jr. was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service in the Tampa, Fla., area in January 2013. He was sentenced to life in prison on a capital murder charge and 20 years on conspiracy to commit murder charges. Under Virginia law, he won't be eligible for parole.
