Smithsonian Planning New Exhibit All About Money

The museum has announced it will open "The Value of Money'' on July 1.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History is preparing a new exhibition all about money, money, money.

The museum has announced it will open its new Gallery of Numismatics and the first exhibition, "The Value of Money'' on July 1. The Smithsonian's coin and money collection is one of the oldest collections on the National Mall.

The museum says the new exhibit will include more than 400 objects from the collection, including some of the rarest coins in the world. Some featured objects will include a storied 1933 Double Eagle coin, a personal check signed by President James Madison, a $100,000 note from 1934 and Depression-era $1 clam shell.

Curators have also acquired emerging monetary technology for the exhibit, including a small Square Reader for mobile credit card payments.
