Men who cheat on their spouses may raise the chance of sustaining a uniquely painful type injury.
A new report from a University of Maryland researcher draws a link between patients suffering from penile fracture and extramarital affairs.
In a small study of men who sought surgical repair for the problem at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Andrew Kramer said that half the men said they'd been cheating on their wives when they sustained their injuries.
Kramer said that his research focused on the "out-of-the-ordinary social situations" that led to this particular injury.
From 2007 to 2011, he interviewed the 16 patients that sought treatment for the problem at UMD. Kramer said in his report that the group was remarkably candid in describing the situations that led up to penile fracture.
Only three patients had actually been in a bedroom when they sustained the injury. Others reported the break happening in cars, elevators, and at the workplace.
Kramer writes that this injury seems to occur within a group of men who have sex in "aggressive" or "stressful" situations.
His report is published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
