The following road closures and detours were put in place due to the hostage situation at the Discovery Building in Silver Spring.
Georgia Avenue is closed in both directions from Colesville Road to Wayne Avenue. Authorities said the intersection of Georgia and Colesville could remain closed into the Thursday morning commute.
Traffic entering Silver Spring on northbound Georgia Avenue is being rerouted left on Spring Street and then right onto 16th Street. Southbound traffic can also use 16th Street as an alternate route.
DDOT is also encouraging northbound motorists on Georgia Avenue in the District to use Piney Branch Road as an alternate route to bypass the closures on Georgia Avenue. Eastern Avenue, on the District/Montgomery county border, can also be used to get to 16th Street.
DDOT is deploying Traffic Control Officers (TCOs) to the area to assist with the flow of traffic. Motorists should also watch for variable message signs directing them to detour routes.
Metrobus routes have been diverted from the area.
Metrorail service has not been affected at this time, but access to Wayne Road from the Silver Spring station was closed.
Montgomery County Public Schools said school bus routes may be altered to avoid the area.
