Self-Proclaimed Gang Boss Gets Jail Time in Teen's Sex Assault

A 21-year-old self-proclaimed leader of a notoriously "vile" gang in Montgomery County, already behind bars, will spend another 15 years in jail.

Andres Cortez of Silver Spring, Md. was sentenced Wednesday in connection with a October 2012 sex assault of a 16-year-old girl. Court documents say Cortez and several other members of his gang assaulted the girl near Wheaton, Md.

Cell phone images show Cortez and others assaulting the girl, as well as flashing gang signs during the act. After the assault, Cortex showed the images to one of his co-workers who reported it to police.

“He was proud to be the leader of [the gang] in Montgomery County and as that leader, he committed one of the most heinous crimes you can commit. Sex offenses against a woman," Prosecutor Marybeth Ayres said in a news conference Wednesday.

Investigators believe there may be more crimes and victims connected to Cortez and his gang. If you have any information, call Montgomery County Police at  240-773-TIPS.
