Second Guilty Plea in Betts Case Expected Today

Could get up to 35 years in prison

A second suspect in the murder of popular school principal Brian Betts is expected to plead guilty this afternoon.

Court documents show Sharif Lancaster will plead guilty to robbery and using a gun during a crime. Lancaster is one of three teenagers whom prosecutors say was at Betts’ Silver Spring home on the night of his murder in April.

Lancaster faces up to 15 years in prison on the robbery charge and up to 20 years on the gun charge.

Another suspect, Alante Saunders, 19, has already pleaded guilty to shooting Betts. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 23.

Betts, the principal at Shaw at Garnet-Patterson Middle School, was found dead in his home on April 15 after he failed to show up for work. Betts met the teenagers on a social chat line, police say.
