Fall's comfortable weather has come to a close - and the change brought a few snowflakes with it, as well.

Snow was reported along the Maryland/Pennsylvania border and in higher elevations west of Hagertown. The snow didn't stick to the roads, but on grass and protected surfaces in areas such as Frostburg, Md., there could be 2 to 4 inches of accumulation.

Closer to the D.C. area, winds were the major weather story. Winds gusting up to 25 to 30 mph sent temperatures plummeting 20 degrees Tuesday afternoon, said Storm Team4 meteorologist Chuck Bell.

By 9 a.m., the region had already seen its high temperature, he said. "It's all downhill from here."

Wednesday morning, we could see the first freeze of the season. It would be the earliest first freeze in the region in seven years.

Thursday morning will likely be even colder, with temps around 20 in Manassas, 23 in Leesburg,  24 in Gaithersburg and 29 in D.C. In some rural locations, temperatures may even dip into the teens. By the afternoon, we could reach a high of 49 degrees, Kierein said.

Friday temps will be similar, but the weekend should be warmer, approaching the 60s Saturday and Sunday.
