White Smoke, Crowds Celebrate Pope Francis

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires was named leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics on Wednesday after being elected pope. He will be known as Pope Francis.

Waiting for a new pope can be taxing. You're essentially staring at a chimney waiting for either white smoke, which means a new pope has been decided, or black smoke, which means that no decision has been made.

So how does one pass the time? By turning a wayward seagull into a worldwide phenomenon.

The bird perched on the Sistine Chapel's chimney for some time and became an instant social media celebrity. Several parody Twitter accounts have already been created, as has a Facebook page.

I guess you could say that the gull has a bird's eye view of the proceedings.
