Scientists Look for Signs of Monument Sinking

Earthquake may have altered ground level around National Mall

Scientists are inspecting the Washington Monument to see if last year's earthquake caused it to sink.

For the past several weeks, surveyors have been looking for any ground level change around the National Mall since the 5.8-magnitude quake hit in August.

Even the slightest millimeter in shift could impact the future of the structure. Plans already in place to fix cracks and other damage from August’s tremors would have to be altered.

Surveying on the Washington Monument is expected to wrap up next week. It could take several more months for scientists to sort through the data.
