PD: School Bus Thieves Were Drunk, Looking for Change

Police say the bus likely suffered front end damage from crashing through a gate.

Police say two people were drunk when they stole an Anne Arundel County special needs school bus early Tuesday morning.

The bus was reported stolen from a school bus lot on Generals Highway in Crownsville around 5:30 a.m. After receiving numerous tips, the bus was found abandoned and heavily damaged in a secluded area near Governors Bridge Road and Strawberry Run in Davidson, Maryland around 9 a.m.

Three hours later, more citizen tips led police to a home on Governors Bridge Road, where they arrested Travis Champagne and Nicole Adams, both 24, for stealing the bus.

Anne Arundel County Police now say the couple was under the influence of alcohol and had sought change to buy cigarettes when they stole the bus. When they crashed it into a BGE tower and further into the woods, the couple attempted to set the bus on fire, police said.

Champagne and Adams are facing charges of first degree burglary, theft over $100,000, destruction of property and attempted arson.
