School Bus Engulfed in Flames

Other buses damaged too

It took two dozen firefighters to bring a flaming school bus fire under control Sunday.

The report of a bus being on fire in a school bus parking lot near New York Ave. and Kendall St. NE happened just before 11 a.m. this morning.

After the first firefighters arrived and saw the heavy fire, several additional fire units were called to assist, including a foam unit, according to DC Fire & EMS Public Information Officer Pete Piringer.

At least three buses were damaged in the fire.

The bus where the fire appears to have started was a total loss, while another buss suffered some moderate heat damage and one other only slight heat and smoke damage, Piringer said.

There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Piringer said it appears to be accidental, possibly mechanical in nature.
