Saved by the Belt

Police officer saved from bullet by belt

A simple call turns into a shootout, and a police officer is hit.

Sunday morning, that officer is recovering, and investigators say he was saved by his belt.

Prince George’s County police were called to Hyattsville Saturday night for reports of a man throwing bottles at cars nears Queens Chapel Road. When officers arrived, they say the man began shooting at them. One of the officers was hit, but the bullet struck his duty belt, potentially saving his life.

The suspect was also hit in the shootout and remains in critical condition this morning. The police officer is expected to make a full recovery.
