Keep your car windows up: Cleanup efforts are underway after a sanitary sewer overflowed in the median of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Riverdale, Maryland.
The overflow, which was caused by a broken sewer main, started around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday between Routes 410 and 450, a spokesperson for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said in a statement.
A WSSC contractor set up a bypass around the broken pipe to end the overflow Thursday afternoon.
An estimated 366,444 gallons of untreated wastewater discharged into an unknown tributary in the Northeast Branch Basin, according to WSSC.
The drinking water system is not affected, but signs have been posted downstream informing residents of the overflow, WSSC said.
WSSC crews will spread lime to the affected area, remove visible solids and debris and post additional signs.
WSSC has notified the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Prince George's County Health Department, the agency said.
