Same Name, Wrong Game

With all  the backlash against BP -- make that British Petroleum -- a local business is feeling the heat with their name.

Right now it’s not easy to have the name BP Environmental, Inc. The company is located in the scenic waterfront town of St. Michaels, Md.  And honest, it has nothing to do with the oil spewing out in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Eastern Shore’s BP is named after Bob Boyd and Parson.  We doubt that company president Lou Ann Parson has ever even been to the Isle of Wight where the “real” BP CEO, Tony Hayward, is having a grand old time on a yacht.

So what does BP Environmental do?  Ironically, they're an environmental consulting company that helps clients get in line with governmental regulations, primarily in the poultry and transportation industries.

The AP reports that Parson says she’s been getting angry e-mails and phone calls regarding their namesake. One call even came in from a confused British Petroleum employee. So what to do?

We’ve all been hearing stories of D.C.-area BP gas stations being boycotted by customers really ticked off about the oil spill.  (Even though they are locally owned and operated by people within our community). And some BP stations in New York were trashed.

So for now, perhaps BP Environmental, our local eco-friendly company will just hope the publicity turns out to be good for business. And just ignore the furious phone calls that mistakenly get through.
