Safe Transportation Options for New Year's Eve

D.C. offers many ways to get around without driving drunk New Year’s Eve.

Uber, a car service accessed through a smartphone or tablet application, is growing in popularity, but Uber charges surge pricing. The busier they get, the more customers may have to pay to catch a ride.

"People in our market are familiar with surge pricing,” said Zuhairah Washington, of Uber DC. “They've seen it on other nights. We wanted to be proactive in letting people know, Hey, it's New Year’s. It's obviously going to be a peak time for people going out and traveling."

Metro, if you're not too drunk to stand, is another good option, with rail service extended past midnight and the last train not scheduled to leave downtown until about 2 a.m.

And SoberRide will offer free rides for up to $30 to D.C. residents 21 and older from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Call 800–200–TAXI.
