SUV Hits Bike in Double-Fatal Collision

    Two people are dead after an SUV struck a bicyclist in Fairfax County, Va., Friday afternoon.

    The SUV was traveling north on Lee Highway approaching Forum Drive when it veered diagonally left, hopped a median, crossed all lanes of Forum and entered a bike path. The SUV struck and killed 18-year-old Chadli Abdelouahid, who was about to enter the bike path and was hit from behind, and brushed a 14-year-old girl before crashing into a tree.

    The driver of the SUV, 31-year-old Gary Thorne, also died at the scene, Fairfax County police Officer Shelley Broderick said.

    Some lanes were closed for a time because of the incident.

    It is unknown why the SUV veered across the roadway and onto the bike path. Police are trying to determine if the driver was distracted or suffered a medical emergency. They are also investigating whether speed or alcohol was a factor.
