The man's dog had been struck and killed by a car while he was at work.

A Rockville, Maryland, man allegedly attacked his roommate with a hammer after his dog died while in her care.

Timothy D. Oliver, 68, of 6060 California Circle, Rockville, was charged with attempted murder and first degree assault on Aug. 5.

Oliver's roommate told Montgomery County police that Oliver attacked her the evening of Aug. 4 after he learned his dog had been struck by a car and killed while he was at work.

She told police Oliver hit her in the head with a hammer until she briefly lost consciousness. She said he then dragged her outside the apartment, where he left her with her cat and a sleeping bag.

A neighbor who helped  the woman after the dog's accident told police that the victim was "terrified" of Oliver and kept repeating, "He's going to kill me."

Police found the woman outside the apartment covered in dried blood at about 6:30 a.m. the next morning. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a depressed skull fracture.
