Burglars Pose as Utility Workers; Rob 3 Elderly Women

Detectives are investigating three burglaries in which the suspects posed as utility workers or salespeople to steal from the homes of elderly women.

Montgomery County police say the crimes happened between May 26 and June 23.

The first suspect approached a 78-year-old woman in the backyard of her home in the 10000 block of Forest Grove Drive in Silver Spring. Investigators say the suspect, a woman, discussed installing new pipes in the victim’s home while a second suspect likely entered the home and stole items while the victim was distracted.

The victim realized the next day that her credit cards were gone. Police say the credit cards were used by a man and woman at various stores in Montgomery County and Washington, D.C.

The suspects got inside the homes of two more women -- an 84-year-old Rockville woman and an 89-year-old Kensington woman -- by posing as power company workers on June 4 and June 12. In each case, the suspects distracted the victim, stole items and escaped without the victim knowing.

Police want to remind residents that all utility workers should carry proper identification. You can also verify information with your utility company before letting employees into your home.
