Riders Accuse Metro Workers of Stealing Best Parking

Metro Transit Police is investigating parking at the Huntington station in Alexandria, Va., after riders complained that Metro employees are taking the best spots and not paying.

Drivers are allowed to wait a maximum of 15 minutes in the lot near the station's entrance or feed the meter to park.

On Wednesday, several vehicles with Metro vests and invalid Metro parking passes visible were parked at expired meters, including one with an expired parking pass for a different station.  (Watch the video above to see Metro employees' responses when confronted on the issue.)

Video shot last week and posted to Unsuck DC Metro shows some of the same cars parked illegally.

All Metro employees must pay for parking and follow lot rules like everyone else, Metro said.

The transit agency released the following statement Wednesday night in response to the report by NBC Washington and Unsuck DC Metro:

"Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Richard Sarles said that the practice of some Metro employees avoiding parking fees at Huntington Metrorail station is not only unacceptable, but a disservice to both customers and other Metro employees. Sarles said that the Metro Transit Police Department will issue citations to employees found violating the parking policy. In addition, those in violation will be addressed separately. Tomorrow, a reminder to all employees emphasizing Metro’s requirement to pay public parking fees will be issued."
