As the recession deepens, some people become more desperate. Retailers lost more than $40 billion in merchandise last year, with most of that taken by employees, shoplifters or vendors.

 
As large retailers turn to expensive loss prevention systems, small businesses on quaint streets also worry.
 
Anita Henry, the owner of Rogue Beauty, a spa and specialty beauty boutique in Virginia, said she relies on her common sense to avoid theft.
 
Other small business owners train their employees to expect the unexpected.
