Reston Zoo Director Charged With Animal Cruelty

Officials: Director did not have permits or training to dispense euthanasia drug

The director of the Reston Zoo has been charged with animal cruelty and possession of a controlled substance following an investigation.

Meghan Mogensen was arrested Friday afternoon.

Officials executed a search warrant against the zoo back in February, when an employee told law enforcement that he had found the wet body of a wallaby in a trash bin.

Mogensen claimed that she had humanely euthanized the wallaby with an injection of Beuthanasia-D. However, the investigation revealed that the zoo did not have the necessary permits or the training to dispense the drug.
