Video: 2 Pulled From Car Overturned in C&O Canal

A team of rescuers waded into the C&O Canal on a chilly Wednesday morning to pull two people from a car that overturned in the water.

The car drove down a towpath into the canal, where two people were stuck for several hours overnight, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

"They were in pretty tough shape," said Pete Piringer of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. "One had a traumatic injury. Took a little doing to get them out."

Video caught by Chopper4 showed the Montgomery County Swift Water Rescue Team wading into the canal near Stop Gap Area between Old Anglers and Great Falls about 7 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Two people were pulled from the car, put onto stretchers and driven to an ambulance waiting nearby.

The passenger suffered critical injuries. The driver suffered minor injuries.

U.S. Park Police said it is a suspected DUI case. Charges have not been filed.

U.S. Park Police is investigating.

The car remained in the water immediately following the rescue. Conditions on Wednesday morning were chilly with temperatures in the 40s.
