Record Number of Visitors Go Park-ing in Virginia

Weather, amenities cited

When it comes to going park-ing, Virginia takes a backseat to no one.

A record number of people visited the state's parks over the July 4 holiday, the Daily News Leader reported.

In fact, parks had 266,739 visitors this Independence Day versus 218,889 last year.

Warm, dry weather and improvements such as more cabins and activities are behind the increase, said  David Johnson, director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Memorial Day weekend attendance also set a new record.

Overall, state park attendance is up 8 percent for the first six months of the year.
