Record Number Take Advantage of Free Sober Ride on July 4

A record number of people took advantage of a program that provided free rides to people who were drinking during their Independence Day celebration.

The Washington Regional Alcohol Program announced Friday that 559 people used its Sober Ride service when it was in effect from 7 p.m. on July 4 through 2 a.m. on July 5.

The service lets people 21 and older get a free ride if they have been drinking, up to $15, through the Lyft ridesharing service by using a special promotional code.

The previous record had been 455 users in 2003.

The service is offered in the Washington, D.C., region on holidays like St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Halloween and the winter holidays to keep potential drunk drivers off the road.
