Record-Breaking Snakehead Caught in Potomac River

A Maryland man has caught a record-breaking snakehead fish in the Potomac River.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Communication Director Steven Schatz says that on May 20, Emory Baldwin was finishing a fishing trip on the Maryland side of the Potomac River when he saw the snakehead. Baldwin used his compound bow to catch the 18.42-pound fish.

The record was made official the next day when Baldwin brought the snakehead to the Gray Brother Market in Marbury, Maryland, and it was weighed on a certified scale.

The previous record was a 17.49-pound snakehead, which had been caught in October of 2015 in Mattawoman Creek.

State fishing records are normally awarded only for fish caught by rod and reel. However, Maryland makes an exception for three invasive fish species: northern snakehead, blue catfish and flathead catfish.
