Rash of Package Thefts in FedEx Field's Shadow

While the Washington Redskins have done well this month, the residents of Victory Promenade, a community of town homes within eyeshot of FedEx Field in Landover, Md., have been steadily losing packages to thieves swiping doorstep deliveries.

“There’s a gentleman in the back of the community where it seems almost daily the last week or so his packages have been walking off,” community manager Kristin Moore said.

One victim has used his home security camera to tape the thieves in action.

“You think during the holidays that you can get stuff at your house safely and not worrying about these things happening,” he said.

In one clip, a man drives by, sees a package on the doorstep, backs up, walks up to the package, shakes it, gives it a once over and then puts it back. The thieves are particular. If it doesn’t look expensive, they drop it and move on to the next one.

Monique said she’s been victimized twice. One package was opened, but the thieves decided they didn’t want it.

Some resident are putting out decoy packages to drive the thieves away.

“I can’t say for sure what’s in the package, but it’s something probably nasty, and it’s definitely not what [the thieves] intended it to be,” Moore said.
