Quick Action Saves Child's Life

Deputy springs into action when teen goes into shock

Quick action by a sheriff's deputy saved the life of a teenager in medical distress.

Loudoun County Deputy Robert Heller was patrolling Route 7 near the Loudoun County Parkway Wednesday night and saw a distraught mother next to a stopped vehicle. The woman ran to him and said her 14-year old daughter was dying and unable to breathe.

Heller saw the teen was turning blue, so he put her into his cruiser and raced her to the nearby campus of Inova Loudoun Hospital.

The hospital's emergency staff was standing by when he arrived. The teen's breathing was faint and she was unconscious. Doctors said she was in anaphylactic shock. She was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital for further treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

She was released from the hospital Thursday.

The hospital staff credits Heller's quick thinking with saving the girl's life.

Heller is a 20-year veteran of the NYPD who joined the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in December 2008.
