Prince George's County Superintendent Leaving for Philadelphia?

Dr. William Hite has been in charge of the county's schools since 2008

The superintendent for Prince George’s County schools could soon be heading to the City of Brotherly Love.

Dr. William Hite confirmed Friday that he is a finalist for the Philadelphia School District’s superintendent opening.

Hite has been in charge of Prince George’s County schools since 2008.

Hite released a statement Friday night, saying in part, “While I have not sought out other opportunities, I have been approached on numerous occasions and have turned them down.” He added, “My wife and I believe this is an opportunity we must explore.”

During his tenure, Hite has been credited with helping to raise the school district’s test scores and provide expanded educational options, like charter and specialty schools.

The Prince George’s County Board of Education also released a statement Friday, which is quoted below in its entirety.

"Dr. Hite is a talented superintendent and this announcement serves as validation of the progress we are making in our school district. If Dr. Hite were to leave, we would be sorry to see him go. However, we remain committed to continuing our efforts to improve the quality of education of our students and will continue to guide the school district as we prepare for the 2012-13 school year."
