Prince George's County Crews Practice for Snow

Hundreds of snow plows hit the streets of Prince George's County Friday morning, and it had some commuters doing a double take.

Three hundred snow plows participated in the county's Annual Snow and Ice Dry Run.

"The idea behind this is to make sure that we are able to test our equipment, make sure that our resources are functioning properly. We want to make sure that if there are any concerns at all with the equipment, we can address them between now and a real event," Darrell Mobley, the director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation, said.

Safety inspections were conducted on the department's fleet, and drivers got a chance to practice their routes.

Driver Dave Howard has been plowing snow for nearly 30 years and still find the dry runs useful.

"We're going to be looking for any changes from the year before, maybe new constructions, roadways change...conflicts that we could have where our plow would be tearing stuff up," Howard explained.

This winter, the county will also introduce an Automated Vehicle Locator system, which will allow residents to see online what streets have been paved.
