UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- The Prince George's County Council voted 8-1 Tuesday to ban the sale of single cigars.

The new law requires stores to sell cigars in packages of at least five. Supporters believe the measure will discourage young people from using hollowed-out cigars to smoke marijuana.

The Maryland Association of Tobacco and Candy Distributors is skeptical. Lobbyist Bruce Bereano said the law will give people an incentive to buy packs of cigars then sell them individually on the street.

Tobacco stores are exempt from the law. According to the Washington Post, the law targets convenience stores and gas stations that sell small flavored cigars for the youth market.

A proposed state ban on the sale of single cigars failed this year.

  • that dude Wednesday, Nov 19 at 3:54 PM FLAG COMMENT wow that's really stupid. if someone was gonna buy 5 blunts over 5 days, wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a pack anyways? buying in bulk? and wouldn't this increase the amount of weed people smoke as now instead of having to get their stoned selves to the gas station, they got a whole pack on the table? i love PG's infinite wisdom
  • Subway Dweller Wednesday, Nov 19 at 1:57 PM FLAG COMMENT Next they'll require Wal-Mart to sell bullets in packs of 200 instead of 50 in order to discourage gun violence in PG Co. The logic being that a box of 200 bullets is heavier, and the would-be killer might not want to carry the extra weight.
  • Bruiser Wednesday, Nov 19 at 1:30 PM FLAG COMMENT Another reason why P.G. County sucks...it's run by idiots.
  • Anonymous Wednesday, Nov 19 at 1:15 PM FLAG COMMENT Wow...Where have ya'll been if you haven't noticed more people are buying by the pack not singles anymore. Way To Go...LOL!!!! And for the few people who still buy singles they will buy the packs and sell singles and make a profit from it to buy more green.....LOL
