The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for parts of north central Maryland and northern Virginia.
Areas under the advisory include Frederick, Carroll and Montgomery counties in Maryland and Loudoun County in Virginia as well as the cities of Frederick and Gaithersburg in Maryland and Front Royal and Leesburg in Virginia.
After almost setting a record high on Monday, colder air and a chance of some winter weather moved in Tuesday.
Far suburbs of D.C. have had freezing rain, sleet, some snow and icy conditions.
D.C. residents can expect cold rain overnight and slippery roads.
There may be some slippery travel for the Wednesday-morning rush hours in upper Montgomery and Frederick counties in Maryland and Loudoun, Clark, Warren and Frederick counties in Virginia.
VDOT is expecting precipitation to freeze overnight in western Loudoun County. VDOT will have almost 200 trucks on local roads Tuesday night, with shifts starting in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties starting at 7 p.m. One hundred of the trucks will be in Loudoun.
VDOT said pretreating started Tuesday morning after rush hour. Bridges, ramps and shady areas were pre-treated.

Precipitation should move out of the area by 7 a.m. Wednesday, and temperatures could return to the upper 40s with a chance for some afternoon sun.
