$100,000 Reward in Shooting Death of Postal Worker

Fellow postal workers came to the scene, and told News4's Darcy Spencer that they worried about their own safety as well

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward up to $100,000 for information in connection with the shooting death of a postal worker Saturday night.

Police said Tyson Jerome Barnette, 26, of Upper Marlboro, Md., was on duty when he was shot and killed around 7:20 p.m. in the 6000 block of Reed Street in Cheverly, Md.

Fellow postal workers came to the scene, and told News4's Darcy Spencer that they worried about their own safety as well. "That could have been me," one told Spencer.

Prince George's County Police canvassed the neighborhood Monday, but so far have no motive or suspects.

There have been complaints in recent months that postal carriers are having to deliver mail later in the day, sometimes after it is dark.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Prince George’s County Homicide Unit at 301.772.4925. Callers wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Solvers at 866.411.TIPS (8477).

A press release from the USPS said, "Any person who kills or attempts to kill any officer or employee of the United States while the employee is engaged in the performance of his official duties can be sentenced to the death penalty."
