Popular Energy Bars Recalled Over Allergy Concerns

Bars could cause serious allergic reaction

Stores are pulling some popular energy bars from shelves after the Food and Drug Administration announced a voluntary recall.

Lifestyle Evolution, Inc. announced a voluntary recall of several kinds of NuGO energy bars because of allergy concerns.

According to the FDA, several kinds of NuGO FREE, NuGO Dark, and NuGO Slim Non Dairy bars could affect people with dairy allergies. The bars may contain undeclared milk, which could cause a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.

The products are safe for those who do not suffer from dairy allergies. A milk protein allergy is not to be confused with lactose intolerance; the two conditions are not the same.

The bars were distributed nationwide, and the recall only affects those made prior to October of 2012 with so-called "best by" date in 2013. Landover-based Giant announced Saturday that it had pulled the products from its shelves.

The affected products include:

NuGO FREE Dark Chocolate Trail Mix
NuGO FREE Dark Chocolate Crunch
NuGO FREE Carrot Cake
NuGO Dark Chocolate Chip
NuGO Dark Mocha
NuGO Dark Mint Chocolate Chip
NuGO Dark Peanut Butter Cup
NuGO Dark Pretzel
NuGO Slim Crunchy Peanut Butter
NuGO Slim Espresso
