Police: Woman Took Blame for Husband in Weekend Crash

Car crashed into apartment building

A woman falsely claimed to be the driver who crashed a car into an apartment building this weekend, attempting to take the blame for her husband, according to Prince George’s County police.

Investigators determined that 36-year-old Akoswa Haynes was lying when she told police she crashed her car into an apartment building on Riverdale Road about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Police determined the actual driver was Haynes's husband, 39-year-old David Archbald Smith.

Police made the determination about the actual driver after receiving a tip from a local television news reporter.

Smith has been cited for driving without a license among other things. Haynes was cited for knowingly giving false accident report information.
