Police Officer Killed in Car Accident

A Metropolitan Police Department officer was killed in a fatal accident.

At about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, Seventh District officer Paul Dittamo and another on-duty officer were responding to a call on the 1400 block of Morris Road SE. The officers were driving north on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE when they collided with a wooden power pole on the 2200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services took both officers from the scene to a local hospital. There, 32-year-old Dittamo died as a result of his injuries.

Dittamo, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at 2:06 a.m.

The other officer suffered non–life threatening injuries. He is expected to be treated and released.

Dittamo has served for the Metropolitan Police Department since June 2009.
