A suspected carjacker who opened fire on police officers has died after he was shot by a Prince George's County officer in Southeast D.C., police sources say.
The man, who was not identified immediately, was suspected of assaulting and carjacking a driver in Fort Washington, Maryland and taking off with a Camry, sources tell News4. Police trailed the driver, who led them on a chase that ended more than seven miles away in Southeast D.C.
The suspect approached a driver on the 200 block of Riverbend Road and demanded money, police said in an update Tuesday evening that the preliminary investigation shows. The driver "couldn't comply with the demand," according to police, and the suspect then hit the victim with a gun. The carjacker then stole the person's car and sped off, police said.
Officers were called to Riverbend Road about 7:15 p.m. and began an authorized pursuit of the carjacked Camry, police said. Officers trailed the suspect all the way to the 2900 block of Gainesville Street SE, near the Maryland border.
The suspect shot at officers, who fired back and hit him, sources said. Two Prince George's County officers fired their weapons, police said.
The Prince George's County Police Department's special investigation response team will conduct a routine internal investigation, police said.
