Police in Alexandria, Va., are investigating the assault of a jogger in the 200 block of East Del Ray Avenue.

The victim told police she was running about 6 a.m. when she was grabbed from behind by a man and touched inappropriately.

Police said she screamed and was pushed to the ground by the man, who then ran away. He was last seen headed toward Mount Vernon Avenue.

The suspect was described as a man of unknown race wearing a black, puffy, thigh-length coat; a black skull cap; and dark pants.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Detective Kevin Thomas at 703-746-6273.

The Alexandria Police Department also is reminding joggers to remember important safety tips while running:

  • Run in well lit areas
  • Try to run with a partner when possible
  • Keep a cell phone with you at all times
  • Let people know what routes you take
