Police: Fairfax County Fire Chief Involved in Crash on Lee Highway

Fairfax County Fire Chief Richard Bowers was involved in a crash on Lee Highway while on duty early Thursday morning, police say.

Police said Bowers called the Department of Public Safety Communications to report the crash at the intersection of Lee Highway/Route 29 and Fairfax County Parkway/Route 286 about 8 a.m.

Bowers was driving southbound on the Route 29 ramp approaching the ramp to northbound Route 286 in his 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, a county assigned vehicle, when the front of the Tahoe collided with the right side of a 2002 BMW that was on the northbound Route 286 ramp approaching Route 29, police said.

A 36-year-old man from the Fairfax area was driving the BMW, police said. He was taken to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Bowers was not injured, police said.

Police did not give any information about a possible cause for the crash.

Fairfax County police are investigating the crash and the Deputy County Executive for Public Safety is doing an administrative investigation, police said.
