Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested after Running Into Metro Tunnel

Metro Transit police chased a suspect into the train tunnels at the Wheaton Metro Station, causing the trains to temporarily halt service along the Red Line.

Police said the man is wanted in connection with an alleged sexual assault outside the Metro station. He fled into the station and into the tunnel as officers approached.

While trains were stopped, a search was conducted, but the suspect was not found. Service was restored after about three hours.

On Sunday, police arrested Joshua Lamont Smith, of northeast Washington, and charged him with fourth-degree sexual assault, second-degree assault and trespassing.
