Police: 2 Boys Fall From Moving School Bus

Two small boys were injured in Takoma Park when they fell out of a side door of a moving school bus Wednesday morning.

The boys, ages 5 and 6, were taken to Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The boys, both kindergartners at Takoma Park Elementary, boarded the bus on Maplewood Avenue. Montgomery County school officials say that as the bus turned a corner, the strap of one student's backpacks caught on the latch of a side door, which opened when the bus drove over a speed bump.

About 50 students, from both Piney Branch and Takoma Park elementary schools, were on the bus at the time of the incident around 9 a.m.

"At the time of the incident, the bus was traveling at a very slow rate of speed and, thankfully, it appears the injuries to the students are not serious," read a message from the school district in part.

The bus is now out of service pending investigation. So far, there's no indication the bus or the latch malfunctioned.

"Parents need to feel safe when they put their kids on that bus," one Takoma Park parent told News4. "There's probably nothing more important for the school district."
