If you missed out on President Obama’s “Cash for Clunkers” program in 2009, now is your chance to enjoy similar trade-in deal for a new car. A new program called the Automotive Upgrade Trade-in Offer (A.U.T.O.) being offered in Northern Virginia promises trade assistance funding to help consumers acquire a new vehicle with improved fuel efficiency.

Pohanka Nissan and Pohanka Hyundai in Fredericksburg, Virginia are your destination to cash in on this limited-time program.

The A.U.T.O. program does not rely on government funding, and is instead maintained by local auto dealers and manufacturers. Under the program, you can receive trade-in assistance of up to $3,500 in addition to the Black Book trade-in value of your car toward the purchase of a new fuel-efficient car.

Like Cash for Clunkes, the A.U.T.O. program hopes to erase Americans’ dependence on foreign oil, and to increase the efficiency of our fuel consumption. The A.U.T.O. program boasts a more efficient model than Cash for Clunkers, however. During Cash for Clukers, many of the cars that were traded in ended up being destroyed.

“We are incredibly excited to be a part of this effort,” said Tim Pohanka General Manager of the dealerships. “The A.U.T.O. program should be more popular than Cash for Clunkers. With trade assistance of up to $3500 on top of the normal trade-in value they will receive, they will have a considerable amount to reduce the price of their newer vehicle. With Nissan and Hyundai both in on this effort, we have a complete lineup for consumers.”

Timing is key for consumes who hope to cash in on the program. The $3 billion set aside for Cash for Clunkers was used up within two months. The AUTO program is privately funded, however it will only be offered for a limited time. Pohanka did not give a date for when the program would end.

“Once the funding for the program dries up, the program is over,” said Pohanka, “so the consumers will have to act quickly if they want to receive the trade-assistance bonus toward their next new vehicle purchase.”
