A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the East Coast at 1:51 p.m. Tuesday, causing people to evacuate buildings from the Pentagon up to New York. The quake was centered between Charlottesville and Richmond, Va. but was very shallow, the U.S. Geological Survey said, which could explain why it was felt as far away as Boston.
