Person Takes Grenade to D.C. Police Station

The Metropolitan Police Department said their Fourth District police station and a few local nearby businesses were temporarily evacuated after a citizen arrived at the station with a hand grenade Sunday morning.

Police said the citizen brought the hand grenade to police for disposal around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. They did not say why the person had the grenade in the first place.

A nearby Walmart and McDonalds were evacuated as a precaution. The 5900 block and 6000 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest, and the 900 block and 1000 block of Peabody Street, Northwest, were closed as police attempted to dispose of the explosive.

Police said the grenade never made it into police station but remained in the person’s vehicle outside. The device was rendered safe by authorities shortly before 3 p.m., and the roads and stores were allowed to reopen.
