Man Killed in Hail of Bullets on H Street SE

A man was shot on H Street SE, near the Maryland border, late Thursday morning.

The victim was killed as more than 20 shots were fired about 11:30 a.m. near 51st and H streets SE, police said. The Metropolitan Police Department found 22 shell casings on the scene of the crime committed in broad daylight.

Late Thursday, the victim was identified as Brian Sickles, 42, of southeast D.C. Neighbors said the victim was well-known in the area as simply B.

A witness who provided his name only as Frank said he heard the shots.

"I heard like 10, 15, 20 gunshots. I saw a guy run through this alley, had on all black or whatever, and then I just saw people converge on the alley," he said. "Our neighborhood is under siege."

One neighbor said she was in tears when she heard the man had been killed.

He was a really nice person," she said. "It's awful. When I found out, I came outside and was just crying real bad."

Ward 7 Councilwoman Yvette Alexander was on the crime scene Thursday afternoon.

"It's brazen, and I really don't know what's going on at this point, in our community, in the city, across the country. It's just a brazenness that's going on right now."

Gunfire is too common in this stretch of Southeast D.C., another neighbor said.

"It's very, very scary," she said. "We teach our little kids around here to just hit the floor. Hear the shots, hit the floor."

No information about a suspect has been released.
