One of the two police officers shot by a gunman outside the Pentagon Thursday night said he is doing fine and credited God with shielding him.

Officer Jeffrey Amos and Officer Marvin Carraway were wounded when a gunman identified as John Patrick Bedell opened fire at the entrance to the military complex in Arlington, va. They returned fire, and Bedell was killed.

Amos and Carraway were treated for superficial wounds and are out of the hospital. Amos, a U.S. Air Force vet from New Orleans, was shot in the leg. Carraway, who served with the Marines, was shot in the shoulder.

“I just thank the Lord that He shielded me when all of this took place,” Amos told the Associated Press.

He declined to answer direct questions about the shooting.

Police are guarding the homes of both officers.
