A man walking with a cane in Northeast D.C. Tuesday morning was killed after a driver hit him and then sped away.
The victim was been identified as 62-year-old John O. Lindberg of Northwest D.C.
Lindberg was crossing Sargent Road NE near Faraday Place NE, about a mile east of the Fort Totten Metro station, about 6:30 a.m. when a car slammed into him, the Metropolitan Police Department said. The impact forced him into the path of a car traveling in the opposite direction and he was struck by that car as well.
The driver who fled the scene has been identified and is cooperating with police, the department said.
A black pickup truck with a broken headlight was towed away at the scene Tuesday afternoon.
A woman who lives nearby said she saw the man walking in an alley and dragging a bag about 30 minutes before he was hit.
Just one block away, a little boy was hit by a car and killed in 2007. J'lin Tyler, 6, was walking to school when he was hit on Sargent Road at Emerson Street NE, The Washington Post reported. Speed bumps and more stop signs then were installed.
