A U.S. Park Police officer has been hospitalized with serious injuries after a crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, authorities said.

Prince George's County fire department spokesman Mark Brady said a vehicle hit a patrol car from behind early Tuesday. It occurred on the parkway between Route 197 and the Powder Mill Road exit.

Brady said the officer apparently was not inside his vehicle at the time, but suffered serious injuries because of the accident. The injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Brady said a woman also was taken to a hospital with injuries.

Southbound lanes of the parkway were closed as authorities investigated the crash.
