Parents Say Montgomery Co. School Discipline Too Lenient

Some Montgomery County parents expressed concerns over proposed new student discipline regulations.

The draft proposal by the Maryland Board of Education is too lenient in light of the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting and other threats, the parents say.

For example, if a student makes a bomb threat or threatens to shoot someone at school, the first offense could result in peer mediation. If a student detonates an explosive device, the first offense also is peer mediation.

A representative for the teacher's union said the draft proposal is a step.

“I do think the regulations do need to be amended a little bit,” Doug Prouty said.

He added, “What we hear from our members is grave concerns about school safety issues.”

The draft is expected to be published soon for public review. The rules won't go into effect until next school year.
